Appeals court decides in favor of victim's estate in railroad wrongful death case
KNOXVILLE -- After three years of legal battles, the tides of justice have turned back in favor of a now-deceased CSX railroad switchman and his legal estate in a case against CSX railroad, one of the nation's leading transportation suppliers. The Estate of Winston Payne, a former CSX switchman who lost his life to lung cancer, obtained an 8.6 million dollar verdict from a Knoxville, Tennessee jury in November 2010.

The World's Tallest Mountain: Mount Everest
Fourteen mountain peaks on Earth stand taller than 8,000 meters (26,247 feet). The tallest of these “eight-thousanders” is Mount Everest, the standard to which all other mountains are compared. The Nepalese name for the mountain is Sagarmatha: “mother of the universe.”
Everest’s geological story began 40 million years ago when the Indian subcontinent began a slow-motion collision with Asia. The edges of two continents jammed together and pushed up the massive ridges that make up the Himalayas today. Pulitzer-winning journalist John McPhee summed up the wonder of the mountain’s history when he wrote Annals of the Former World: “The summit of Mount Everest is marine limestone. This one fact is a treatise in itself on the movements of the surface of the Earth. If by some fiat, I had to restrict all this writing to one sentence; this is the one I would choose.” Read more >> |
Winter Schedule in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
GATLINBURG, TN - Great Smoky Mountains National Park has announced its winter operating schedule. As cooler weather approaches and visitation decreases, various facilities will close, including campgrounds and picnic areas, and operating hours for some visitor services will be reduced.
Some roads are inaccessible during winter months due to ice and snow. Other areas do not get enough traffic to provide maintenance to keep those roads open.
