"Rowing in Spring" is 2011 Dogwood Arts Limited Edition Fine Art Print Winner

A self-taught artist from Knoxville, Tennessee, Marji Smith, has been named the winner of the 2011 Dogwood Arts 2011 Limited Edition Print competition. The choice was made by a panel of jurors composed of local art professionals and Dogwood Arts Festival representatives.
Smith's expressionist painting, "Rowing into Spring," a depiction of a crew team rowing along the Tennessee River, displays masterful use of acrylic and ink allowing viewers to feel the harmonious movement of water and wind, and evokes the rhythmic connection between man and nature. "This painting epitomizes Dogwood Arts' joyful celebration of arts and nature," comments Dogwood Arts' executive director, Lisa Duncan.
Marji's interest in art began at an early age. Over the course of her 40 years as an artist, she has experimented with many different styles including editorial cartooning, formal portraits and abstract work. She has always attempted to capture what she is feeling in her paintings and blends energy, wind and light to capture the feeling of a particular moment.
Marji moved back to Knoxville in May 2010 after living in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii for six years. She says that there is a special quality to Tennessee that drew her back.
Known for her contemporary expressionist paintings, Marji has won numerous awards in national and regional juried exhibits and is currently committed to continuing her painting and writing.
