TUPELO, Mississippi – Elvis Presley was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Tupelo and died August 16, 1977, in Memphis, Tennessee. Maybe it is winter’s cold that makes the marking of his birthday so much more subdued than commemorations of his death. The annual remembrance of his death, simply called Elvis Week, is a major tourism and cultural event in Memphis that draws thousands of fans from around the world.

Regardless of the weather in January, rest assured that at least some devoted fans will pay special visits to the statues of Presley that are landmarks in downtown Tupelo and downtown Memphis.
If you visit the statue in Memphis, it’s a short walk to the Arcade Restaurant, where there’s an Elvis booth and where Presley enjoyed griddle-fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. If you swing by the Tupelo statue, you’ll be near several of the more than 25 Elvis-themed guitars on the Elvis Guitar Trail. Taking birthday celebration photos in both cities is a breeze, even if it’s a chilly breeze
