In Pictures: Getting dressed up in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas – Sometimes a single retail store can reinforce an entire region’s identity. That’s the case with Starr Western Wear, an El Paso institution outfitting El Paso, Ciudad Juarez and a big slice of New Mexico with clothes suitable for the ranch and fashionable western parties alike. Owner Enoch Kimmelman started here as a child, sweeping the hardwood floors for his parents, who opened the business in 1964. Starr’s influence stretches around the world because El Paso is home to the Army’s Fort Bliss. Soldiers and dignitaries from many nations come through Fort Bliss, and many leave with western apparel from Starr.
Hats, and more hats
Rest assured that you can find a cowboy hat at Starr Western Wear. The inventory ranges from utilitarian straw hats costing about $25 to a $3,000 chinchilla Stetson blinged up with diamonds. Image by Tom Adkinson

Steamer
Starr Western Wear claims the only steam hat-shaping service in El Paso, a service passed down from the store’s early days. Owner Enoch Kimmelman recalls when the crown prince of Bhutan visited to have his cowboy hat shaped. Image by Tom Adkinson

Big Sam
No portfolio of El Paso photographs is complete without a shot of Big Sam, the Levi’s jeans sign that hangs outside Starr Western Wear. Big Sam once was a smoker, but his cigarette disappeared at some point over the decades. Image by Tom Adkinson
