8 very long seconds at ProRodeo Hall of Fame

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – Eight seconds sounds like a very short period of time – unless that’s how long you are trying to hang on atop a bucking bronco or an ill-tempered bull.

That feat, the signature event of American rodeos, is frozen in bronze in front of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy in Colorado Springs. The sculpture depicts one of rodeo’s legendary stars, Casey Tibbs, and an almost equally famous horse, Necktie. Tibbs, who also was in several western movies and even had an uncredited part in Marilyn Monroe’s “Bus Stop,” died in 1990, soon after induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

The ProRodeo Hall of Fame opened in 1979 to honor the legends of professional rodeo and to pay tribute to cowboy culture. It has its own arena, where you may catch a rodeo demonstration or special event. You may even see a rider, horse or bull destined to greatness. The hall of fame recognizes almost 300 people and almost three dozen bulls and broncos that have made their marks in the sport.
