HONOLULU – The memorial to the USS Arizona, part of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, reopened this month after 15 months of work to remedy problems with dock and ramp areas. The Arizona is second only to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as a visitor destination in Hawaii. The National Park Service administers both locations.

The sunken battleship is a constant reminder of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, that brought the United States into World War II. Of the 1,512 men on board the Arizona that morning, 1,177 died. The bodies of more than 900 sailors and Marines remain entombed in the wreckage that now is capped by a 105-foot-long structure reached by motor launches. More than 4,000 people a day come to pay their respects and contemplate the impact of war. The record attendance year for the memorial was 2017, when 1,947,495 people visited.
