Steam train headed from Knoxville to Asheville for Autumn Adventure
Norfolk Southern and the Tennessee Valley Railroad will take adventurers on a scenic 256-mile round trip from Knoxville to Asheville.

KNOXVILLE – Experience an autumn adventure aboard a steam-powered train from Knoxville, TN to Asheville, NC. On Saturday and Sunday, November 16 and 17, The Tennessee Valley Railroad and Norfolk Southern is conducting an Asheville Autumn Adventure on Norfolk Southern’s “River Line” which parallels the beautiful French Broad River for most of the 256-mile round trip route.
The 256 mile roundtrip will leave Knoxville each morning at 7:30 am and return around 8:00 pm. Departure in Asheville will be at the Historic Biltmore Village, where passengers will have almost a 3 hour layover for shopping, dining and sightseeing.
Departure time from Knoxville is 7:30 am, with return expected around 8:00 pm. Passengers will board at 401 W Jackson Ave near the Gay Street Viaduct Passengers will detrain in Asheville at the Historic Biltmore Village around 12:30 pm for an extended layover with opportunities for shopping at the many specialty shops, departing at 3:00 pm. Enjoy lunch on your own at one of many local restaurants and patronize a variety of boutiques and retail outlets. Passengers will receive a parking pass for one of several lots in downtown Knoxville with shuttle service provided at no additional charge. A commissary car will be included on the train selling snacks, soft drinks, and light food items. A gift shop will also be featured on board for those wishing to purchase souvenir items.
Excursion tickets start at $105 per seat for passengers age 3 and up to $125 for upholstered reclining seats, and go up to Observation Lounge seats for $225 with a meal included.
The Asheville Autumn Adventure is part of the 21st Century Steam initiative that is a partnership with Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and Norfolk Southern. The Tennessee Valley Railroad is a non-profit educational corporation based in Chattanooga, Tennessee and is the Southeast's largest operating historic railroad.
