Late Rally Allows Methodist to Defeat Maryville, 79-78

MARYVILLE -- The Scots men's basketball team fell to future USA South conference foe Methodist 79-78 in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

As Maryville College's Donald Rucker secured a late lead with a pair of key free-throws, Methodist University's Dervin Johnson hauled down a rebound off a missed James Whitehead jumper and connected on a follow up basket in the paint to help the Monarch finish off a strong second half rally to defeat Maryville 79-78.

MC had established a 39-34 halftime lead after hitting 4-of-8 three-pointers. Methodist proceeded to hit 50% of their second half shots while holding Maryville to a 40% shooting effort, allowing the Scots to only hit one second half shot from beyond the arc.

Methodist (3-3) was led by James Whitehead's 24 points. He was 10-for-17 from the field including three from long distance. Mark Jernigan added 20 points while Bryan Hockaday finished with a double-double after sinking 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Dervin Johnson finished with a dozen points including his game-winning put back.

Maryville (4-3) had five players post double digits in scoring. Milton Stanley was 8-for-17 to finish with a team-high 22 points. Donald Rucker added a double-double with 13 boards and 13 points. Eight of his rebounds created offensive second opportunity shots. Freshmen Christian Ford and Joey Bodewig added 12 and 11 points respectively while senior Ben Williamson contributed11 points and 8 rebounds.

The Scots will return to action next Wednesday when they host Bryan College in a non-conference challenge. The MC women will host Carson-Newman on Wednesday beginning at 6:00 p.m.. The men will tip-off against Bryan at 8:00 p.m.
