MARYVILLE -- The Maryville College women's basketball team used a pair of 12-0 and 9-0 runs to pull away from Covenant College and earn a 66-42 Great South Athletic Conference victory in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Wednesday evening.
Following a brief Covenant lead due to MC turnovers and misses shots, Maryville dashed to a 14-4 advantage. The first half concluded with MC posting a 23-9 advantage on the boards while hitting 46% from the floor. As Tayler Smith, Janell Menard, and Lauren Burnett deposited 21 collective points, Maryville took a 34-18 lead to the locker room at the intermission.
MC jumped out on a 9-0 run to begin the second period and carried the advantage to a 13-2 run within the first five minutes of the second half. The Scots finished the game hitting 47% of their shots while holding Covenant to a 28% effort. Maryville out rebounded Covenant 46-24 while allowing only one player to post double digit scoring.
Covenant (5-13, 4-6 GSAC) was led in scoring by Margaret Cross with 10 points.
Maryville (11-6, 7-1 GSAC) had three players finish with double digit scoring efforts. Janell Menard was 6-for-10 from the field to lead all scorers with 15 points. Lauren Burnett was hot from the perimeter hitting 4-of-5 treys for 12 points. Kiera Payne was 4-for-9 from the field with 11 points while pacing MC on the boards with eight rebounds. Tayler Smith added eight points and seven rebounds while Donja Robbins tossed in five boards.
The Scots will host Huntingdon College this Saturday for another key GSAC challenge. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
