2011-2012 GSAC Women's Basketball Conference Awards Announced

DECATUR, Ga.- The Great South Athletic Conference announced its 2011-2012 women's basketball All-Conference awards with Sada Wheeler of Piedmont leading the way as Player of the Year, Madison McDonald of LaGrange as Freshman of the Year and for the second straight season, Darrin Travillian of Maryville earns Coach of the Year.

Leading his team to a fourth straight GSAC regular season title, Travillian earned himself Coach of the Year honors for the second year in a row. Sitting with a pretty 15-1 record in conference, he led the Scots to another #1 seed spot for the conference tournament this weekend.

Four Scots standouts earned All-Conference accolades. Janell Menard, a junior from Loudon, Tennessee, paced MC is scoring with a 12.8 per game average while shooting 48% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. Kiera Payne, a junior from Chattanooga, was third in the GSAC in field goal percentage shooting 50% while averaging 10.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest. Lauren Burnett, a sophomore from Maryville, was the Scots' perimeter threat hitting 46 treys on the season and averaging 8.2 points a game while directing the offense at the point guard position. Tayler Smith, a Crossville, Tennessee native, was MC's post presence. While in the paint, Smith deposited 52% of her shots ranking her second in the league in field goal percentage. This junior averaged 9.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Alex Bond, a freshman from Oneida, Tennessee, was named to the Great South's All-Freshman team after playing in 23 contests and averaging 3.5 points and 2.7 rebounds every day she wore the orange and garnet.
