Mobile Household Hazardous Waste Truck Pops Up On May 13
May 4, 2026, 1:26 pm

KNOXVILLE - Area residents who need to dispose of old or unwanted chemicals, non-alkaline batteries and battery-powered devices are invited to bring them to the mobile Household Hazardous Waste truck at the Powell Convenience Center (7311 Morton View Lane) on Wednesday, May 13, from 3-6 p.m. The facility will not be accepting trash or recycling during this time.

This pop-up event with the mobile HHW truck, which features the friendly face of former Waste Facility Manager Charlie Thomas, will help residents of Knox and surrounding counti9es safely discard items that shouldn’t go in household trash while they learn more about the services provided by the brick-and-mortar facility at the City’s Solid Waste Facility, 1033 Elm Street.

“This free service for all residents helps keep toxic chemicals out of our landfills, streams and wastewater,” says Makenzie Read, Waste and Resources Manager of the City of Knoxville.

From acids and automobile oil to varnish and weed killer, household materials with labels like toxic, poison, corrosive, flammable or irritant are accepted. Visit KnoxvilleTN.gov/HHW to see a list of more than 50 common household items accepted by the mobile truck and the permanent facility.

Residents will experience the same drive-thru convenience of the HHW: stay in your car while staff members remove your materials for disposable and pick up some printed information on the resources available at the HHW and Solid Waste Facility on Elm Street.

Like the HHW facility at 1033 Elm Street, this event is open to households only; businesses, churches, non-profits and other groups should contact a permitted hazardous waste transporter for proper disposal.
