Nourish Knoxville Expands Double Up Food Bucks

KNOXVILLE -- Nourish Knoxville is expanding access to locally grown food in East Tennessee with the launch of Double Up Food Bucks at Hometown Produce in New Tazewell. The addition marks the nonprofit’s second participating small grocer location and expands year-round access to nutrition incentives for residents in Claiborne County.

Opened in 2024 by Thompson Farms, Hometown Produce is a family-owned farm store serving Claiborne County with locally grown products. Through Double Up Food Bucks, shoppers using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at Hometown Produce can stretch their food dollars while supporting local agriculture.

As of July 11, shoppers at Hometown Produce receive a matching dollar in Double Up Food Bucks for every dollar spent on SNAP-eligible purchases, up to $25 per day, to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables, including food-producing plants and seeds. At Nourish Knoxville partner farmers markets, shoppers receive $2 to spend on locally grown fruits and vegetables for every $1 spent on SNAP-eligible purchases, up to $50 daily.

“As a long-time vendor at Nourish Knoxville’s farmers markets in Knox County, we are familiar with the benefits of Double Up Food Bucks to both our farm and SNAP shoppers and are excited to bring the program to Claiborne County,” said Cody Thompson, owner of Thompson Farms and Hometown Produce. “We already accept EBT at our store and believe the addition of Double Up will help our community afford more healthy produce.”

According to the Tennessee Department of Human Services SNAP Participation Report, approximately 4,400 individuals in Claiborne County were enrolled in SNAP as of September 2025.

“The addition of Hometown Produce as a Double Up participating location with daily operating hours will help make the program more accessible to Claiborne County residents,” said Charlotte Tolley, CEO of Nourish Knoxville. “Double Up Food Bucks is a triple win, ensuring locally grown produce is available to everyone, helping local farmers gain new customers, and keeping food dollars circulating within East Tennessee.”

Double Up Food Bucks was launched in 2009 by Fair Food Network in Michigan to help low-income families eat more fruits and vegetables while supporting American farmers and strengthening local economies. In 2019, Nourish Knoxville joined Fair Food Network and more than 20 states nationwide to bring Double Up to East Tennessee.

Currently, Nourish Knoxville offers Double Up Food Bucks at its Market Square and New Harvest Farmers Markets in Knoxville, along with five regional farmers markets: Depot Street Farmers Market in Greeneville, Erwin Farmers Market, Jonesborough Farmers Market, Seymour Farmers Market, and Union County Farmers Market in Maynardville. Hometown Produce joins Boone Street Market of Jonesborough Locally Grown in Washington County as Nourish Knoxville’s second participating store. There are now more than 20 participating Double Up Food Bucks locations across East Tennessee.
