KNOXVILLE - During his Weekly Update, Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs talks about the memorial honoring Deputy Tucker Blakely, the upcoming East Tennessee History Center Genealogy Conference, and an encouraging update on Zoo Knoxville’s chimpanzee, Lu.

This week, a memorial was unveiled to honor Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Tucker Blakely, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in early October 2023. The memorial is located at the corner of West Emory and Brickyard Roads in Powell, not far from the bridge dedicated in his honor.

“This memorial will not ease the pain of his loved ones and colleagues, but it will ensure that his courage, service, and sacrifice will not be forgotten,” says Mayor Jacobs.

The East Tennessee History Center is hosting its free Genealogy Conference from Nov. 7-9. The event offers a unique opportunity for genealogists, historians, and residents to explore the region’s rich family histories and archival resources. More information can be found at https://www.knoxcountylibrary.org/etrr.

Finally, Lu, Zoo Knoxville’s 34-year-old chimpanzee, continues to make great progress following surgery to remove a benign spinal tumor. The Zoo reports that Lu is recovering well and is expected to rejoin his troop soon.
