NASHVILLE, TN -- Thursday, State Senator Richard Briggs (R-Knoxville) was reappointed chairman of the Senate State and Local Government Committee. This announcement was made by Lt. Governor Randy McNally during the organizational session on the Senate floor.

McNally praised Briggs for his insight and leadership on the State and Local Government Committee.

“As a long-time leader in local government, Richard Briggs did excellent work last session in this role,” said McNally. “A proven and effective chairman, I am confident he will continue to excel. I am proud to re-appoint him.”

The State and Local Government Committee hears all matters pertaining to state and local governments in general, including utility districts, employees, ordinances, boundary lines, veterans’ affairs, penal and correctional institutions, alcoholic beverages and election laws.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this capacity and the confidence placed in me by the Lt. Governor,” said Sen. Briggs. “As a former county commissioner, I understand the needs of local governments and the vital role they play in helping our communities thrive and grow. I look forward to seeing that they have the resources they need. And as a military veteran, I am glad to play a big role in providing for our veterans.”

Briggs formerly served as a colonel in the U.S. Army.

Briggs was also appointed to the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee and the Rules Committee.

Senator Briggs was re-elected to the Senate in November 2022 and was sworn in to office on Tuesday. He represents part of Knox County in Senate District 7.
