Knoxville Area Urban League’s ‘Empowerment Day’ to help individuals start anew
June 10, 2022

KNOXVILLE -- The Knoxville Area Urban League will welcome justice-involved individuals to its first “Empowerment Day,” an event encouraging participants to start the reentry process, on Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at its headquarters, 1514 E. 5th Ave.

Experienced volunteers from the University of Tennessee College of Law’s Legal Clinic will talk with registrants about clearing their records, members of the NAACP will register voters, counselors with the Tennessee Child Support Employment and Parenting Program will discuss child support, and the individual needs of each participant will be addressed without judgment.

Advance registration is encouraged so event partners can prepare personalized action plans. For many participants, attending the event will mark the start of regaining their rights. There will be opportunities for walk-up attendees to connect with resources as well.

“When individuals emerge from incarceration, we want them to know that the Knoxville Area Urban League is here to help them reestablish a new life in the community,” said Phyllis Y. Nichols, president and CEO of the Knoxville Area Urban League. “Empowerment Day will introduce participants to the reentry process and offer a number of needed resources in one location. Experts will work one-on-one with registrants to outline next steps and inspire them to follow through so they can reach their goals.”

The local Urban League is committed to providing effective services to justice-involved individuals and assisting community members as they navigate reentry. The Knoxville Area Urban League offers pre- and post- release services, including skills training, connection to employment resources, expungement clinics and more.

To register for the event, contact the Knoxville Area Urban League’s Workforce Development department at 865-544-5511 or info@thekaul.org.
