NASHVILLE - Lt. General John “Glad” Castellaw, a retired U.S. Marine Corps three-star general from Tennessee released the following statement in response to violence erupting in Washington D.C., unleashed by President Trump and aided by many Republicans, including Tennessee Republicans, complicit through through their own attacks on the will of the people in the 2020 election:
"During my 36 years in the Marines I saw armed mobs taking control of the streets in the Balkans, in East Timor, and other locations around the world and now I am seeing it here in Washington, at the Capitol, the center of our democracy. In what can only be described as an attempted coup, an angry mob of armed people are inside our Capitol, threatening our government, including the very Republican leaders complicit in this attack seeking to halt a peaceful transfer of power, the hallmark of a free people.
And a President who instigated the assault on our sacred House of the People, sits in his White House bunker, concerned only with holding power. This is what a third world dictatorship looks like, rule by mob law. This is happening because of the encouragement of some Republicans, including our Tennessee congressmen and senators who repeated his lies about this election in order to undermine the will of the people and desperately, illegitimately, attempt to hold onto power they clearly do not deserve. It is past time for them to put our country first and forsake the charlatan that occupies the Presidency.
This is what it looks like when a proud nation falls, when centuries of liberty end, and when Lady Liberty bows her head with tears in her eyes when she can no longer stand as a beacon of freedom to the world. May God have mercy on us!"

Marine Lt. Gen. John "Glad" Castellaw, USMC (Retired) is a three-star general from Tennessee and who has served 38 years in the military. Castellaw served as deputy commander, U.S. Marine Forces Central Command serving in Tampa, Fla., and Bahrain, Iraq following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He also served as the commanding officer of Marine Weapons and Tactics Squadron One and later chief of staff for American military operations, overseeing 250,000 servicemen and women in 27 countries. He is now the President of Crockett Policy Institute, a nonprofit policy research and advisory group.
