KNOXVILLE (FBI) – Joseph E. Carrico, Special Agent in Charge of the Knoxville Field Office, held a Virtual Cyber Briefing with public and private school superintendents and IT administrators throughout the state to discuss the challenges created by distance learning. Nearly 100 school systems participated in this morning’s briefing. Due to COVID-19, most school systems have moved to either entirely on-line classes for the 20-21 school year or to a hybrid schedule of on-line and in-class learning.

Distance learning has created a unique set of challenges that, if left unchecked, could create an unwelcoming environment for our children. Now, more than ever, information technology systems are a lifeline to many students across the state.

“Part of the FBI’s mission is protecting the American people. One way we can accomplish this is by sharing information which may be helpful in preventing crimes against our children and our infrastructure,” said Special Agent in Charge Joseph E. Carrico. With assistance from the FBI Memphis Field Office, Cyber Squad experts discussed current threat streams, preventative actions to keep systems operational, how to improve cyber hygiene, and what to do and whom to call should your system be compromised or someone accessed a virtual class and posted sexually explicit material.

Both the Knoxville and Memphis Field Offices remain ready to respond and assist teachers, IT administrators, and superintendents safely maneuver through these unprecedented times while they work diligently to educate Tennessee students.
