Kilbride named to UT-Battelle Board of Governors

KNOXVILLE – William Kilbride of Chattanooga has been named to the UT-Battelle Board of Governors by University of Tennessee System Interim President Randy Boyd.

“As we look to strengthen our relationships between UT, the Tennessee Valley Authority and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Bill is a perfect choice to join this dynamic group of leaders who help guide our critical work. His connections to Chattanooga will be a great asset,” said Boyd, who is also chair of the UT-Battelle Board of Governors.

UT-Battelle has managed Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the Department of Energy since 2000 and is overseen by a board, which provides independent oversight and contract assurance.

Kilbride currently serves on the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Board of Directors. He previously was president/CEO of the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce from 2014 to 2017. For more than 20 years, he was president of the home division and chief sustainability officer for Mohawk Industries in Calhoun, Georgia. He also worked for Dean Witter Reynolds Financial Services as the vice president of corporate planning and the New York Stock Exchange as the director of market surveillance. He graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management.

“It’s an honor and privilege for me to be asked to serve on the Board of Governors,” Kilbride said. “The opportunities the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee have to significantly contribute to economic development in this region and beyond are significant. I look forward to helping to grow economic partnerships through knowledge sharing."

UT-Battelle was established in 2000 as a private not-for-profit company for the sole purpose of managing and operating the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. Formed as a 50-50 limited liability partnership between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute, UT-Battelle is the legal entity responsible delivering the Department of Energy’s research mission at ORNL.

The University of Tennessee is a statewide system of higher education with campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Martin and Memphis; the UT Space Institute in Tullahoma; the UT Institute of Agriculture with a presence in every Tennessee county; and the statewide Institute for Public Service. The UT system manages Oak Ridge National Laboratory through its UT-Battelle partnership; enrolls about 50,000 students statewide; produces about 10,000 new graduates every year; and represents more than 387,000 alumni around the world.
