Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont benefits from Brookfield Renewable $20,000 donation

TOWNSEND, TN - Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont has received a $20,000 donation from Brookfield Renewable to support local youth programming.

“As a renewable energy company that places the utmost value on biodiversity and promoting a safe, sustainable environment, we saw Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont as a natural partner. The Institute and their staff provide an invaluable service in teaching children how interesting the world and environment around us is,” said David Harris, Brookfield Renewable Director of Operations, Atlantic South Region.

This donation will provide opportunities for underserved kids in our community to attend residential programs at Tremont Institute. Tremont programs promote self-discovery, critical thinking and effective teaching methods to engage students in nature.

Last week, Tremont welcomed David Harris and Brian Noonan, Brookfield Renewable Community Relations Manager, North America, to Tremont’s campus.

"It was really special to host the team from Brookfield Renewable and for them to see our students in the river studying stream ecology. Our two organizations share a common theme of water sustainability and I value having local partners whose financial gift makes it possible for Tremont to serve local kids,” said Jennifer Jones, PhD, and Tremont Institute President and CEO.

“Today was a valuable experience at Tremont. From observing the school group in the stream, I saw that the students were engaged and enjoyed learning in a manner that they weren’t accustomed to. They didn’t need much encouragement; they all wanted to learn,” said David Harris.
