Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords critically injured at first "Congress on Your Corner" event

While Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford was hosting the first of the year "Congress on Your Corner" in Tucson, AZ today, a gunman in his early 20s shot into the crowd, critically injuring Giffords and iat least 12 others. Included in the others shot were Giffords' district director and local press secretary.

According to the University Medical Center in Tucson, at least 4 others are dead.

Rep. Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, was first elected to the House in 2006. She represents the state's 8th Congressional District.

This Saturday's "Congress in Your Corner" came at the conclusion of the first week of the 112th Congress. Giffords took the oath of office for a third term on Wednesday and on Thursday she participated in a reading of the U.S. Constitution on the floor of the House.

Rep. Guiffords posted her most recent message on Twitter at approximately 12:38 pm: "My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now. Please stop by to let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later." - @Rep_Giffords
