KNOXVILLE – Families from across Knoxville gathered this weekend at the McNabb Center for Wellpoint Tennessee’s drive-thru community wellness and turkey giveaway event, held in partnership with KAPA, Second Harvest East Tennessee, and Gordon Food Service.
As part of its ongoing commitment to local communities, Wellpoint Tennessee provided 500 free turkeys to families, in addition to local health and wellness resources. Residents were welcomed on a first-come, first-served basis, allowing families to take home a vital part of their Thanksgiving dinner while also connecting with crucial health resources.
“Food insecurity remains one of the most pressing challenges facing families in Tennessee,” said Natalie Cooper, president of Wellpoint Tennessee. “Through events like this, we can help meet immediate needs by providing holiday meals, while also supporting long-term community health and whole-person well-being.”
Many Tennesseans, particularly Medicaid members and families, face challenges putting nutritious meals on the table, especially around the holidays. By offering on-site health and wellness resources, the event aimed to help alleviate short-term food insecurity while reinforcing Wellpoint Tennessee's commitment to long-term community health.
“The holidays can be a stressful time, particularly for families facing financial hardship,” Cooper added. “Our turkey giveaway events are about spreading hope, gratitude, and wellness during a time when community support matters most.”
Wellpoint Tennessee hosted similar events in Nashville, Bradley County, and Memphis, demonstrating its statewide dedication to strengthening communities, empowering families, and eliminating barriers to health and wellness.
“We want our members and neighbors to feel cared for and valued; not just as patients, but as people,” Cooper said. “Through these giveaways, we’re addressing food insecurity, connecting families with resources, and creating opportunities for better health and well-being for everyone in our community.”
