KNOXVILLE — In honor of National Epilepsy Awareness Month, Knox County will light the Henley Street Bridge purple on Sunday, November 17, to raise awareness and show support for the more than 3,000 individuals living with epilepsy across East Tennessee.
Purple is the international color of epilepsy awareness, symbolizing hope and solidarity with those affected by seizure disorders. The lighting of the bridge serves as a visual reminder of the importance of education, understanding, and advocacy for people living with epilepsy.
“This community gesture speaks volumes,” said Monika Hancock, Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation of East Tennessee (EFET). “When our city lights up purple, it not only shines for those living with epilepsy but also helps reduce stigma and spark conversations that can save lives.”
Throughout November, EFETN encourages residents to wear purple, share epilepsy facts, and nominate three friends to join the movement or donate $26 in honor of the 1 in 26 people who will develop epilepsy in their lifetime.
Community members are invited to view and photograph the bridge lighting and share their pictures on social media using #EpilepsyAwarenessMonth and #EndEpilepsy.
