Knoxville Salvation Army to host annual Cup of Hope event
October 11, 2022

Fundraiser benefits domestic violence shelter

KNOXVILLE -- The Salvation Army of Knoxville will host its ninth annual ‘Cup of Hope’ fundraiser event on October 25, with proceeds going to benefit the Joy D. Baker Center. The event will be held at Bridgewater Place in Knoxville and begins at 11:30am.

“We are very excited to move to a new venue this year, with room to entertain approximately 250 guests, “said Major Cam Henderson, Salvation Army Area Commander for Knoxville. “Everyone who attends will enjoy a great meal, an inspiring word from a domestic violence victor, and get the opportunity to support The Salvation Army’s Joy Baker Center for Women and Children,” added Major Henderson.

The Joy D. Baker Center in Knoxville provides shelter and hope to women whose lives have been wounded by domestic violence. Its mission is to provide safety, shelter, and restoration to women and children, and to help in rebuilding their lives and guiding victims of domestic violence to a fresh new start in life. The center serves hundreds of women and children annually who are fleeing domestic violence and the trauma of homelessness.

The tragedy of domestic violence impacts 1 in 4 women each year in the Knoxville area. In 2019, the Knoxville Police Department responded to nearly 12,500 calls for service that were related to domestic violence. The Joy Baker Center seeks to provide a safe haven for those who have suffered abuse. Through specialized counseling, life skills classes, job placement, hot meals, and warm beds, women and their children can have hope again. More than 65% of those that leave the Joy Baker Center program go to a permanent housing opportunity.

The Salvation Army annually helps more than 23 million Americans overcome poverty, addiction, and economic hardships through a range of social services. By providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, rehabilitation for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, and clothing and shelter for people in need, The Salvation Army is doing the most good at 7,600 centers of operation around the country. In the first-ever listing of “America’s Favorite Charities” by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Salvation Army ranked as the country’s largest privately funded, direct-service nonprofit.
