KNOXVILLE – WGU Tennessee surprised Knoxville resident Matthew Jones with a $10,000 scholarship as part of the Tenn-K Scholarship campaign, which will cover up to 75% of the costs of his degree program.

Jones learned that he had been awarded the Tenn-K Scholarship during a surprise Zoom call with Kim Estep, vice president, Southeast Region, Western Governors University.

“Matthew’s background in customer service gives him a great foundation as he pursues a career in management,” Estep said. “We are thrilled to present Matthew with a Tenn-K Scholarship and look forward to seeing all that he will accomplish after earning his degree.”

After working in the restaurant and retail industries for 15 years, Jones began to notice a leadership divide in his past and current managers. He noticed a clear difference between a “clock-puncher” and a “bigger picture”-styled manager and realized that earning a degree would be the best way to lead a team strategically and move up in his career.

“Having advanced as far as possible without a degree, I understand the importance of feeling accomplished and fulfilled in my own work life,” Jones said. “The only way to reach my short- and long-term goals is to earn a bachelor’s degree, and this scholarship will help me pursue my career goals without the extra financial stress.”

Already three months into the Business Administration Management degree program at WGU Tennessee, Jones plans to use his degree to find a career that is fulfilling personally and financially and provides a comfortable life for his family.

Jones is one of up to 10 Tennesseans who will earn WGU Tennessee’s 2021 Tenn-K Scholarship. The scholarship – which covers roughly two-thirds of WGU Tennessee’s already-low tuition of $3,500 per term for most programs – is awarded based on students’ academic records, readiness for online study, and demonstrated financial need.
