Mental health is important at any age and children are no exceptions. They experience stress when they have to adapt or change to situations. Although some change can be exciting, stress can build with negative changes. The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting families, so it’s important to know the signs of stress in children and help them cope.
Signs of stress in children can include:
• Changes in eating habits
• New or repeated bedwetting
• Emotional outbursts including yelling and crying
• Not wanting to take part in family or school activities
Parents can help children deal with stress by:
• Creating family routines. Frequent activities like movie or game nights can comfort children.
• Encouraging regular physical activity like nature walks
• Limiting violent TV shows and games that young children watch and play
• Seeking advice from professionals like your kid’s health care provider
