Foliage and the Fall Five
November 21, 2021

Enjoy your trees today, and prepare for winter weather
just around the corner

Tennessee has enjoyed a spectacular year of fall foliage with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows splashed across trees statewide. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, now is the perfect time to get outside, admire the leaves, and catch up on important yard maintenance for the winter ahead.

“The bright, beautiful colors of fall are a great reminder that our trees give us so much,” says Nick St. Sauveur, district manager with Cortese Tree Specialists in Knoxville. “We can give back to our trees by taking care of them each fall with just a few simple steps.”

By spending a little time on tree care now, you can save a lot of time reacting in spring. Plus, your trees will emerge healthier and perform better when they awaken from dormancy. On the flip side, if plants enter winter stressed, their problems will only worsen.

What should I do NOW to keep my trees healthy for winter?

Plant. Fall is the optimal time to plant a tree. The mild weather and frequent rainfall help roots establish quickly and grow strong. Plant trees by the end of November. Choose a location that can accommodate the mature size of the tree, which will add property value for years to come.
Mulch. Trees benefit from a 2-4-inch blanket of mulch over as much of the root zone as possible. It acts as a moisture barrier and helps keep soil temperature consistent. Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from the trunk of the tree. Be sure to avoid piling it against the trunk like a volcano as that can trap moisture, creating a cool hideaway that attracts fungus, disease, and pests.
Prune. Removing dead, diseased, or unsafe branches helps trees maintain a safe structure and tolerate high winds. For this step, you may wish to reach out to a certified arborist. Certified arborists specialize in knowing just which branches to remove (and how to do so safely) in order to reduce hazards. Well-maintained, properly pruned trees are less likely to break and cause damage in heavy wind, rain, and snow.
Fertilize. Even though trees appear dormant during winter months, their roots continue to grow and require nutrients. Apply a slow-release fertilizer to help keep trees nourished all winter long. Come spring, your trees will be blooming and ready to show off.
Ask An Arborist! If you’re worried about a tree or branch, now is the time to consult a certified arborist – before winter storms hit! They can assess the damage visible to the eye – as well as things that may not be immediately visible on the surface – to help ensure your trees stay healthy through winter weather.

Follow these guidelines to help trees stand strong all winter. If your trees need help, contact your local arborist.
