If the thought of sleeping under the stars and waking up to a stream of a fresh catch is something that excites you, you’re probably already on the hunt for ways to make your backpacking journey memorable.

While places like the Great Falls in Virginia are a no-brainer for adventurers who enjoy picturesque views, ample preparation can make your experience even more enjoyable. If you’re already shopping for bass lures and filling your pack with essentials, keep the below tips in mind.

Get Fit First

If you are new to the backpacking scene, prior strength and endurance training can go a long way. Consider indulging in day hikes that will help get you in shape. If you’re tackling two to four-hour hikes, prepping your body can prevent bouts of exhaustion and dehydration.

Do you lack nearby opportunities for outdoor exercise? Don’t worry — a few sessions on the elliptical or stair climber can substitute for endurance training. Don’t forget to pay attention to your upper body — carrying a pack for long periods can take a toll on your body.

Buy the Right Gear

When backpacking, you’ll want to carry as little weight as possible. Not only do you want to purchase a pack that suits you, but you’ll also have to consider lightweight gear.

Prioritize items such as space-saving tents, water treatment supplies, weather-appropriate clothing, and a compact sleeping bag. Pack only what you need and dress in layers to prevent overstuffing your pack.

If you’re an angler with bulky equipment, start shopping for travel-sized versions of your favorite rigs and rods.

Pack Appropriate Meals

High-calorie packed meals are essential to staying nourished on your outdoor excursion. If you are traveling near water, pack meals that you can quickly rehydrate.

Other space-saving and high-energy options include power and protein bars, fruits, powdered soup, and even pasta! If you’re opting out of a campfire, you can purchase a portable backpacking stove to heat your meals after a long day of trekking.

Do Something Out of Your Comfort Zone

Venturing outside of your comfort zone might involve something as simple as going off the grid or indulging in a new activity like sport fishing. Whatever the case, being open to opportunities you would have otherwise been opposed to in the past can make for an incredible experience.

Know What to Do in an Emergency

It should go without saying that you can’t travel without an emergency kit. However, while essentials such as bandages and antiseptic solutions will go a long way, there is no such thing as being over prepared.

Before your excursion, you’ll want to research your destination. What is the weather like? Do you have to take along special gear?

Make sure your close friends or family know where you are before embarking on your solo journey. Consider packing a satellite phone with emergency contacts on speed dial.
