High school photographers participate in Knoxville area scholarship program

KNOXVILLE – They’re as young as 9th grade, but they’re coming to brave the wilds of the Great Smoky Mountains. They’re coming from all corners of the country: Gainesville, Florida, to Portage, Michigan; San Diego, California, to Williamstown, Massachusetts. The 10 awardees of the North American Nature Photography Association’s 2019 High School Scholarship Program are all being drawn to the Knoxville area by the same thing: A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“From classroom instruction with leading nature photographers and scientists, to the field sessions in famous Cades Cove and at local streams and mountain peaks, students in this program improve their nature photography skills while learning about today's important conservation issues,” said Tom Haxby, program instructor and incoming NANPA President.

The NANPA High School Scholarship Program is an immersive education program based at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. Program highlights include field trips, biodiversity education, and a photo-story project that the students work together to create over the course of the event. This year the students, their advisors, and the photography industry professionals who mentor them will be at the institute from July 1-6.

“Many past students in the NANPA High School Scholarship Program have gone on to great achievements in nature photography,” Haxby noted. “Perhaps some from this group will do the same.”

Information on the 2020 application cycle will be available in August. For more information on the NANPA High School Scholarship Program, visit nanpa.org/highschool.

As North America’s premier nature photography organization, NANPA promotes the art and science of nature photography as a medium of communication, nature appreciation, and environmental protection. It fosters excellence and ethical conduct in all its endeavors, particularly encouraging responsible photography in the wild. Learn more at www.nanpa.org.
