They’re turning 20 at Southern Market — 1996-2016 — and they’re celebrating in style this holiday season! Join the 20th anniversary celebration from November 3-6 and shop decorative home décor, stylish gifts, and boutique fashions from the more than 40 local merchants and 50 local Etsy artists located within Southern Market. Merchants will host interior design presentations, artists’ demonstrations, make and take workshops, and trunk shows. A catered box lunch will be served on Thursday or Friday with a reservation and fee. Live music and enjoy free gourmet food samples will add to the festivities.
Two decades ago, Frances Sexton and daughter Susan Worthington, co-founder and current owner of The Southern Market, envisioned the concept of an interiors marketplace, arranging more than 40 shops under one roof. Each inviting shop is designed by individual merchants who offer a medley of interior design, art, fashion, and gift items. Such a delightful mix of merchants makes Southern Market through creative, collaborative retail merchandising has been Knoxville’s premier design market place since 1996.
The Southern Market has transitioned into a new generation of leadership with Susan’s mother retiring and now Susan’s daughter, Callie Worthington, assisting in the store. Continuing the central vision of supporting local small businesses, new expansion ventures like e-commerce are being launched as they embark on Southern Market’s third decade. A new shop within Southern Market, Handmade, features the creative work of more than 50 local and regional Etsy artists. A natural extension of the Southern Market, Handmade, is an exciting opportunity to discover talented artists in our own backyard. Beyond the creative storefront, Southern Market merchants gear up for festivals at Southern Market three times each year: Spring Fling, Tailgate Party, and Holiday Open House. At the festivals, ideas are endless with interior design presentations, artist workshops, trunk shows, and feature events. The Southern Market is full of ideas for the shopper with an insatiable thirst for decorating!
