NASHVILLE – With gifts, holiday treats and décor, the holiday season is a favorite time of year for many. But, according to a new Holiday Home Hazards poll by Allstate, holiday planning can also create some unexpected hazards.

Despite this years’ unseasonably warm weather, it is important that Tennesseans don’t put off preparing their homes for upcoming colder temperatures. The third annual Allstate Holiday Home Hazards poll revealed the top season specific damage that occurs for Tennessee residents is burst pipes from freezing with an increase of 1518%.

While burst pipes tops the list, an increase in home fires may be the greatest cause for concern due to the fact that the volunteer state has the sixth highest home fire fatality rate in the country. In fact, this year Allstate partnered with the Red Cross for a Home Fire Safety Campaign to help raise awareness about home fire safety to help combat home fire related fatalities. Now, equipped with data from the Holiday Home Hazards Poll, Allstate is continuing working to help Tennesseans better protect themselves and their loved ones.

“While we celebrate with our loved ones it’s important that Tennessee residents stay diligent about protecting what matters most – their families and their homes.” Said Kathryn Minniehan, Allstate agent.

Allstate claims data reveals upticks from colder temperatures that could wreak more havoc:

Allstate recommends that Tennesseans take extra precautions before leaving on holiday travel to prevent other common seasonal home damages.

• Whether it’s “check-ins” using geo-location services, travel plan updates, or even uploading photos, people may be unknowingly giving “digital thieves” insight into their car or home and the times when they’re away from them.
• If water pipes are located near exterior walls, leave the cabinet doors open to help circulate warmer air and let faucets drip slowly to avoid freezing.
• During heavy snowfall, hire a professional to keep your home’s roof and gutters clear.
• Make sure your attic is properly ventilated – the colder the attic, the less melting and refreezing on your roof.

Survey Methodology
The survey of 1,001 American adults age 18+ was conducted Oct. 12 to Oct. 15, 2015 via an online survey using a sample reflective of the American population. The survey was conducted by FTI Consulting, Inc. (FTI) for Allstate.
