KNOXVILLE – This October, the YWCA Knoxville is using a new message to stand up to domestic violence and raise awareness on how to stop it and where to find support. “That’s Just Wrong,” three simple words that address a complex issue, is the theme of the YWCA’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month which begins September 28.
Despite its recent national attention, many still do not realize that one in four women in the U.S. will be victims of domestic violence and three women are murdered by their partners every day. Violence reaches into schools, workplaces and homes, affecting individuals of all ages, races, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Throughout October, the YW, whose mission is to eliminate racism and empower women, is launching an extensive campaign to raise awareness and education by hosting a series of events and programs. While women are most widely impacted by domestic violence, children, domestic partners, men and the elderly are also victims of this heinous crime. The YW is a critical community resource for victims, providing an all-encompassing Victim Advocacy Program.
The YW will launch the campaign on September 28 and is enlisting individuals, groups and organizations to join them in saying “That’s Just Wrong” to domestic violence.
Community members can help with the campaign by raising awareness on social media, by cover downtown in purple ribbons, by viewing works of art from domestic violence survivors, and by volunteering with outreach efforts.
To help raise awareness on social media use #ThatsJustWrong when sharing anything DVAM-related and by changing your Facebook and Twitter cover images to match those of the YWCA Knoxville for the month of October.
You can help the YWCA cover downtown in purple ribbons beginning September 28 at 6:00 pm. Raise awareness in neighborhoods or businesses during the month of October with a purple bow from the YWCA. Contact the YWCA at 523-6126 if you are interested in participating.
Stop by on October 3, 5:00-8:00pm for a special evening at the YWCA Knoxville as they display works of art from domestic violence survivors. The YW is located at 420 West Clinch Ave.
The YWCA Knoxville Enough! Volunteer Corps program is recruiting volunteers to assist in its domestic violence outreach efforts within the Knoxville community during all months of the year. Contact the YWCA at 865-523-6126 if you are interested in participating.
YWCA domestic violence advocates will be available during the month to educate churches, social groups, community organizations, and businesses about domestic violence and the impact in the community.
