Lucinda Oakley Ogle Commemorative Quilt handmade by Judy Schmidt framed by Randy Ogle.

A handmade Lucinda Oakley Ogle commemorative quilt hangs center stage at the new Through the Years Gatlinburg History Museum. The new museum is an attractive, interesting and informative addition to the Welcome Center at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies and houses a vast collection of artifacts and memorabilia depicting mountain life through the years.

The quilt hangs to acquaint visitors with the Gatlinburg Garden Club’s Lucinda Oakley Ogle Historic Cabin restoration project. The club is raising funds to reconstruct the Lucinda Ogle Cabin for use as an historical museum depicting the influence of Lucinda Oakley Ogle and other mountain folk who made major contributions toward preserving the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

The quilt was hand-quilted by Gatlinburg Garden Club member, Judy Schmidt, in memory of Lucinda Ogle, a charter member of the club who was responsible for founding the Wildflower Pilgrimage, an annual event which now brings thousands of plant and nature enthusiasts to Gatlinburg each year.

The quilt depicting the Lucinda cabin surrounded by native wildflowers is displayed in a handcrafted walnut frame created by the hands of another Gatlinburg craftsman, Randy Ogle, who has built solid wood furniture for over forty years at The Chair Shop. The Ogle family has been in woodworking for four generations. The woodworking shop is located in the Arts and Crafts Community.

Also on display at the welcome center is a replica of the Lucinda Ogle cabin which the garden club plans to reconstruct at the site of the Gatlinburg Welcome Center on The Spur. A smaller version of the cabin stands nearby where visitors can make donations to the Lucinda Oakley Ogle Historic Cabin Restoration Fund. Donations may also be mailed to the Gatlinburg Garden Club, P.O. Box 891, Gatlinburg, TN 37738.
