KNOXVILLE — First Baptist Church of Knoxville invites the community to join the congregation and staff for an afternoon of BBQ and bluegrass on Sunday, Sept. 14, 4-8 p.m. The BBQ and Bluegrass Block Party, featuring Gold Rush and the Knox County Jug Stompers, will bring Appalachian sounds to the church’s front lawn and kicks off the 2014-2015 concert series.
“Our concert series provides us with the opportunity to host talented musicians in our facilities and engage with community members who may never consider visiting our traditional worship services,” said Tom Ogburn, senior pastor for First Baptist Church of Knoxville. “We’re especially excited for Sunday’s launch event that unites southern music with southern food.”
Sunday’s event will be catered by Love That BBQ of South Knoxville, and lawn games will be provided for all attendees to enjoy. While the music and games are free, meals will be $7.
After the Sept. 14 block party, the concert series line up offers a variety of concerts through April 2015, including:
• Singer-songwriter, recording artist Kyle Matthews on Oct. 12
• Festival of Sacred Music and Hymns featuring the University of Tennessee Concert Choir, Men’s Choral and First Baptist Church of Knoxville Sanctuary Choir on Nov. 9
• Hanging of the Greens featuring First Baptist Church of Knoxville Sanctuary Choir on Nov. 30
• Christmas Eve Service featuring First Baptist Church of Knoxville Sanctuary Choir on Dec. 24
• American Spiritual Ensemble on Feb. 15
• Singer-songwriter and recording artist Miriam Wallace in March
• Pellissippi State Community College Sacred Choral Music Concert on April 19
“Our concert series is a gift to our neighbors, family and friends,” Ogburn added. “We hope the entire community will join us for the BBQ and Bluegrass Block Party on Sunday and throughout the coming months for the rest of the concerts.”
