Monroe County's diverse arts to be featured at Emporium Center

watercolor, acrylic, sculptures, and more by the Artists Association of Monroe County and young artists from VSA Arts Tennessee. This exhibition is the first time the two organizations have partnered together and will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 2-30, 2013. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on August 2 from 5:00-9:00 PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres.

The Artists Association of Monroe County is a diverse community of artists committed to working together toward the mutual advancement of the artistic and professional development of all its members. They meet each month at the First United Methodist Church in Madisonville, and guests are welcome to attend. Meetings include a program or invited speaker, artwork critiques, and time for fellowship and refreshments. AAMC currently has about 45 members, including professional artists, retired artists, art teachers, hobbyists, and students. VSA Arts International was founded in 1974 by Jean Kennedy Smith, sister to former President John F. Kennedy and sister to the founder of Special Olympics. The organization was officially called Very Special Arts and it had a mission to empower people with disabilities through the arts. The mission of VSA Arts Tennessee is to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in and express themselves through the arts and arts education. The Side by Side, Diverse Arts of Monroe County exhibition will be on display at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, from August 2-30, 2013. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, August 3, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
