KNOXVILLE -- The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present “From the Expansive to the Intricate,” a new exhibition featuring large and small scale works by Kathy Holland of Oak Ridge and Althea Murphy-Price of Knoxville. Holland will exhibit landscape paintings of New Zealand and Southern Appalachia, and Murphy-Price will exhibit alternate processes of drawing, printmaking, and fibers-based sculpture. The exhibition’s title reflects the range of subject matter as both artists explore the concepts of attraction and distortion in their work: Kathy Holland’s paintings portray extraordinary geographic terrains, defined by travel and translated through photography and memory, and Althea Murphy-Price’s work examines how artificial, manufactured hair can be a beautifying embellishment and symbol of personal expression. The exhibition will be displayed in the Emporium Center from August 2-30, 2013. A public reception will take place on Friday, August 2, from 5:00-9:00 PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and chocolate fondue from the Melting Pot.

A native of Virginia, Kathy Holland attended the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University where she earned a BFA in painting and printmaking. She studied wood-engraving with Blair Hughes-Stanton at the Central School of Art and Design in London, England, and then for two years she worked as a printmaker at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, CT. Holland immigrated to Canada in 1986 and settled in the rural town of Deep River, Ontario, maintaining a home and studio there for eleven years and eventually becoming a dual Canadian-American citizen. During that time her work was exhibited extensively in solo shows throughout Ontario and in juried shows across the US. She moved to Oak Ridge in 1997, with a solo exhibition the following spring at the Townsend Gallery in the Candy Factory in Knoxville. In 2008, she devoted two months exclusively to painting directly from the landscape as she traveled and camped solo throughout the South Island of New Zealand. Two recent exhibitions, at the Oak Ridge Art Center and the Art Market Gallery, have included some of the 40+ works painted on location during the New Zealand project. She continues to create drawings, etchings, relief prints, and paintings and maintains a full schedule of juried national and international exhibitions and solo shows. In addition, she has done occasional work as a freelance graphic artist, medical illustrator, muralist, portraitist, art exhibition juror, and drawing instructor. She is also an exhibiting member, former board member, and website manager of the Art Market Gallery. She has taught classes in various media at the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Oak Ridge Art Center. She has presented and exhibited her work internationally and nationally in such cities as Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Richmond, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Charleston, and Beijing, China. Juried and group exhibitions include the 2009 International Printmaking Exhibitions in Jingdezhen, China, the 79th Annual International Print Center Competition in Philadelphia, the 2007 and 2005 Boston Printmakers Exhibition and the 2009 Piccolo Spoleto Invitational Exhibition in Charleston. Murphy-Price has also been an artist in residence at the Frank Lloyd Wright School, University of Hawaii at Hilo, and The Vermont Studio Center.
