“Steven Spielberg, Historian? Emancipating Lincoln” lecture and showing of Stephen Spielberg’s Lincoln
KNOXVILLE - The East Tennessee Historical Society is presenting a special showing of Stephen Spielberg’s Lincoln with commentary provided by Lincoln scholar, Dr. William E. Hardy. The event will be held at The East Tennessee history Center at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 11. It is free and open to the public.
Spielberg’s historical drama Lincoln (2012) chronicles President Abraham Lincoln’s final months and the political struggle for passage of the 13th Amendment by the U.S. Congress in 1865. Spielberg’s film seeks to find the man behind the monument. In doing so, he reveals President Lincoln’s personal struggles as he deals with battlefield, constitutional, and moral decisions. How can the viewer separate history from creative license? Join us for a screening of the film Lincoln with comments and discussion led by Dr. William E. Hardy, a lecturer in the history department at Lincoln Memorial University and on staff at the East Tennessee Historical Society.
The lecture is a part of a series of programs and brown bag lectures accompanying the feature exhibition Of Sword and Pen: Pivotal Moments in Civil War East Tennessee at the Museum of East Tennessee History through October 13, 2013. The exhibition is composed of very rare, important documents and artifacts recounting pivotal moments in East Tennessee’s Civil War history.
