KNOXVILLE -- The Arts & Culture Alliance will present two new exhibitions of paintings by local artists Marcia Goldenstein and Jean Hess in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 2 – December 2, 2012. Goldenstein's exhibition, entitled "Collection/Re-Collection", is an installation project that transformed the results of her father's decades-long extensive collection of stone tools and other artifacts into paint. Hess's exhibition, entitled "Place", is a series of collage paintings addressing various issues related to a sense of location in the universe, ranging from memory and reflection to orientation to fear and uncertainty. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on November 2 from 5:00-9:00 PM with complimentary hors d'oeuvres.

Marcia Goldenstein's exhibition, entitled "Collection/Re-Collection", is a recollection in paint of her father, his interest in the past and their shared past. It is also an extended still life that uses the genre as a vehicle allowing the brush to echo the beauty and complex contours revealed in the objects. The exhibit will also include a set of related map works on paper and several landscape paintings. Goldenstein received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Nebraska. She has been a visiting artist at the National Academy of Fine Arts, Bratislava, Slovakia; Sichuan University, Chengdu, China; Beihang University, Beijing; the University of Texas, San Antonio; Arizona State University, Tempe; University of Indianapolis; Arrowmont School, Gatlinburg, TN; and at other universities, schools and museums. Her works have been in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Europe and China. She is represented in permanent collections at the Joslyn Museum, Omaha, NE; Institute for Great Plains Studies, Lincoln, NE; Knoxville Museum of Art; Sioux City Art Center; Arkansas Art Center; Hallmark, Kansas City, and many other museum, corporate and private collections. Goldenstein is currently a Professor of Drawing and Painting at the University of Tennessee's School of Art. For more information on Marcia Goldenstein, visit www.marciagoldenstein.com.

Jean Hess's work is informed by a lifelong connection to particular places, especially as they are framed by the natural world, including various feelings those specific places elicit. "What I call 'placeness' covers many aspects of my and humanity's relationship with the perceived universe and what has happened within particular loci over time," says Hess. She received her MA in Cultural Anthropology from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Hess has had solo exhibitions throughout the Southeast at universities, colleges, galleries, the Nashville airport, and with the Tennessee Arts Commission. Her works have also appeared in recent exhibitions in Evansville Museum of Art, History and Science; William King Museum; Reece Museum; East Tennessee State University; Brooklyn Art Library; Art House Atlanta; Association for Visual Arts; and at other museums. She is represented in permanent collections at Huntsville Museum of Art, Evansville Museum of Arts, Science and History, City of Chattanooga, Knoxville Convention Center, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, and many other corporate and private collections.
