KNOXVILLE -- The deadline is fast approaching for team registration for the KARM Dragon Boat Festival. June 11, 2012 is the last day to register for festival participation.

Teams can register online at www.knoxville.racedragonboats.com or by calling 865-742-4306.

The tenth anniversary KARM Dragon Boat Festival is expected to attract thousands at the Cove at Concord Park for high intensity boat races, music, cultural performances, children's activities and fantastic food. Over 8,000 people attended the 2011 event.

More than 60 corporate and community teams are expected this year to compete for a variety of awards from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through racing 41-foot Hong Kong style boats across the water. The tenth anniversary event goal is to raise money to provide 100,000 meals for the needy who come to KARM for food and shelter. One meal at KARM costs $1.87.

KARM provides the basic needs of food, safety, and shelter for those in emergency need.

This year's event will host an additional attraction. The race car for Trevor Bayne's Bristol Motor Speedway race on August 25th will be available for festival goers to view. Trevor Bayne, a Knoxville native, won the 2011 Daytona 500 at 21 years old, the youngest person to ever win the race. Bayne is offering a portion of the sponsorship for the Bristol Motor Speedway car to Knox Area Rescue Ministries. For more information, visit www.yourracecar.com/karm.

Volunteer opportunities are available to help make the KARM Dragon Boat Festival a success. All volunteers get an event T-shirt and will be placed at one of many volunteer stations, including: marshaling, docking, registration, children's activities, food services, and parking, among other areas. For volunteer opportunities please visit www.karm.org/joinus/volunteer or contact volunteer@karm.org.

Sponsors include McKibbon Hotel Management, Mesa Associates, Inc., Regal Entertainment Group, WIVK-FM, The Sports Animal, Newstalk 98.7, WBIR-TV, Comcast, and Knoxville.com. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for this popular Knoxville event. For additional information see www.knoxville.dragonboats.com or call 865-742-4306.

Knox Area Rescue Ministries, which is home to nearly 400 people each night and provides nearly 1,000 meals daily, has served the area as a Christian ministry since 1960. KARM is devoted to rescue, recovery and restoration, providing food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, and healing for hurting people in our community.
