Historic Ramsey House to host three special events

KNOXVILLE -- The Historic Ramsey House in Knoxville will host three special events in April and May, 2012.

A beginners' quilting class will teach you the basics of how to make a quilt. Laura Metz will teach "Understanding the Quilt Making Process" on April 24, 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The class will take you from the very beginning of the process through to completion with a brief touch on each step along the way. You will learn how to make your own patterns and templates, piecing, pressing, sashing, and borders. Also you will see how to layer, quilt, and finish with a binding.

The fee for this class is $20.00. Tea, coffee, and light snacks will be provided.

The old art of chair caning will be taught in a three day class which will take you through the entire process. An additional option during the three day class is instruction for the split bottom technique. The work shop will be held May 29-31, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily. The instructor is Bonnie Sheeley. There is a $25.00 fee for the one day split bottom technique only or $75.00 for the 3 day chair caning workshop.

For the history buffs, a Civil War Living History and Reenactment weekend will be pressnted by the Civil War Re-enactors of East Tennessee on May 12th and 13th. Recreation of the Skirmish on the Holston which occurred on February 20, 1864 will be held at 2:00 pm each day by Civil War re-enactors. Visitors may stroll the grounds through Union and Confederate encampments experiencing the life of a soldier of that era. Tom and Sue Wright as Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd will perform their "Life of Lincoln" at various times during the weekend. General Lee, his horse Traveler, and Mrs. Lee will be in attendance throughout the weekend. A Ladies Tea and Fashion show presented by the Union of the Confederate Daughters. There will be Civil War period games and activities for children, Civil War period music and a display of the medical practices of the era. Tours of the Ramsey House will be available for a $3.00 person. Food for purchase available from vendors. The event will be held from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm both days. Admission is $5 for adults; $3 for children 12 to 7; children 6 and under are free. Mothers of all ages will get free admission on Sunday, Mother's Day.
