Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon ready for kickoff at 9:00 a.m. today with over 7,000 participants

KNOXVILLE -- The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon race weekend kicks off at 9:00 a.m. today. This two-day event is expected to have over 7,000 participants.

The actual race will be held on Sunday, April 1, but today will be filled with lots of activities to get people prepared for the big race.

Between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, a Health and Fitness Expo will take place in Exhibit Halls 2 and 3 at the Knoxville Convention & Exhibition Center. The Expo is free and open to the public. All event participants are required to pick up their race packets at the Expo, where last-chance registration will be offered for marathon events, space permitting.

At noon today, Chris Gillespie, founder and executive director of TEAM 413 - Gracerunner Ministries will speak to race participants.

Other race events on Saturday include:
• 2:00 p.m. – All adult race participants are invited to attend a free "Les Mills BODYCOMBAT" class for adults at the Expo.
• 4:00 p.m. – NBC's Biggest Loser contestant Joe Mitchell will provide some inspiring remarks.
• 4:45 p.m. – Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center instructors will provide a free "Hip Hop Atomic" warm-up class for kids on the World's Fair Park Festival Lawn.
• 5:30 p.m. – Families will enjoy the new fun Mascot Race featuring Kids Run mascots Eddie B. Steady and Ace Smart as well as local favorites such as WIVVK the Frog, Newsy, Shoney Bear, Buzz Bee, East Tennessee school mascots and others.
• 6:00 p.m. – The Covenant Kids Run: The one-mile Covenant Kids Run starts on the Clinch Avenue Bridge over World's Fair Park and finishes at the 50-yard line in Neyland Stadium. More than 1,000 kids age 12 and under are expected to participate.

Sunday, April 1:
All Sunday events start at the Clinch Avenue Bridge over World's Fair Park and will finish on the 50-yard line inside Neyland Stadium:
• 7:25 a.m. – Start time for wheelchair and handcycle participants
• 7:30 a.m. – Start time for marathon, half-marathon and four-person marathon relay races
• 7:45 a.m. – Start time for 5K race
• 10:00 a.m. – 5K race awards ceremony in Thompson Boling Arena
• 2:30 p.m. – Marathon course closes
• 3:00 p.m. – Marathon, half-marathon and four-person marathon relay awards ceremony held at Calhoun's on the River

A live broadcast of the finish line will be shown on the JumboTron in Neyland Stadium and on the big screens in Thompson-Boling Arena at the Pilot Post-race Party. Maps of the course are available at www.knoxvillemarathon.com.
