Memphis Educators Host Governor Bill Haslam and Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman for Education Roundtable

MEMPHIS -- Memphis City Schools (MCS) was honored to host a forum with Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman on Thursday for a roundtable discussion on the future of education in Tennessee. It was the first meeting between the governor, commissioner, MCS Superintendent Kriner Cash and Shelby County Schools Superintendent John Aitken since a March 8 vote by Memphis residents to merge the school systems.

Teachers and administrators from both districts also joined the discussion, offering the governor and commissioner their advice and perspectives on education reform.

"This meeting is part of an ongoing dialogue between communities as we strive to create a better educational environment for all of the children in Memphis and Shelby County," Superintendent Cash said. "I'm gratified that Governor Haslam wants to hear first hand from our teachers and administrators."

Memphis is in the midst of a major effort to reform its schools. Through its Teacher Effectiveness Initiative, a $90 million multi-year program launched in partnership with the Gates Foundation, MCS is defining what makes an effective teacher and transforming the way teachers are evaluated in efforts to significantly improve student achievement.

Earlier this week, in a scheduled visit to Memphis, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation reiterated its strong support for MCS and its Teacher Effectiveness Initiative.
