The iconic rock band Three Dog Night will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2027. The iconic rock band was formed in 1967. Founded in Los Angeles, the band drew its early influences from pop rock, blue-eyed soul, and funk rock. Like many musicians from the 1960s, such as Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney, who are still going strong into their ‘80s, Danny Hutton and Michael Allsup show no signs of slowing down.
The band derived its name when actress June Fairchild (best known as the Ajax Lady from the 1978 Cheech and Chong film “Up in Smoke”) suggested the name. Fairchild was Hutton’s girlfriend at the time and had read an article about Aboriginal Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep while embracing a dingo. A native species of wild dog. On colder nights, they would sleep with two dogs. On freezing nights, it was called a “three dog night.”
The group scored 11 top ten hits, including three that went to number one: “Joy to the World”, “Mama told me not to Come”, and “Black and White.” Seven of their albums were certified gold, and their debut album, “Three Dog Night,” was certified platinum.
The band used outside songwriters to write their songs and introduced several songwriters that would become iconic, such as Randy Newman, who wrote many of the songs in “Toy Story,” Hoyt Axton, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams, and Harry Nilsson.
Other familiar hits by the group include “One”, “An Old-Fashioned Love Song”, Eli’s Comin’”, and “Never Been to Spain.”
The band sold more than 50 million records and was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000.
Three Dog Night is coming to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee, North Carolina, on March 27. The band takes the stage at 9 p.m. For more information, visit caesars.com. |
