Maryville College Men's Soccer claims GSAC Title with 1-0 victory over Huntingdon

MARYVILLE -- Maryville College was able to score in the 83rd minute to secure a 1-0 victory over Huntingdon to secure their fifth consecutive Great South Athletic Conference title on Saturday, November 5th on the campus of LaGrange College.

In a rematch of a game that saw Maryville win 3-1 over Huntingdon earlier in the season, the scoreboard was much closer this time around. Although the Scots had the better of the play in the first half, outshooting the Hawks 2-0, Maryville was thoroughly dominant in the second half. The Scots mustered 11 shots to only one for Huntingdon while also attempting 12 corner kicks to zero for the Hawks in the second half.

The lone goal in the match was scored in the 83rd minute when sophomore Tyler Tinker deposited a shot behind the Huntingdon keeper. This would be the only goal that freshman keeper Zach Gutzman would need in recording his sixth shutout of the year. For his exceptional play throughout the GSAC tournament Maryville's Jake Holt was name tournament MVP.

"Our men have worked real hard all season to achieve their goal of winning the GSAC. I'm proud of every member of this team and I hope we get a chance to play in the post season," said head coach Pepe Fernandez.

Maryville will bring a 14-4-2 record in front of the NCAA selection committee and hope they have done enough and have a strong enough resume to warrant a pool B tournament berth. The Scots were last in the NCAA post season in 2005 when they went all the way to the Sweet 16.
