Maryville Takes Down Regionally Ranked Hampden-Sydney 2-1 and Earns Tournament Championship
MARYVILLE, TN -- In their closing game of the Shellenberger Memorial Tournament, hosted by Lynchburg College, the Scot's took down the regionally ranked Hampden-Sydney Tigers 2-1 on Sunday September 11th.
Maryville got on the board in the ninth minute when Jake Holt scored from David Lethco. Just ten minutes later, Travis Bolton added to the Scot's lead with the help of Ridge Carter. Zach Gutzman would make the 2-0 lead stand up, giving up a late first half goal than riding out the late pressure to secure the 2-1 victory. Maryville was able to outshoot Hampden-Sydney 14-10 on the afternoon.
"The Lynchburg Tournament had four quality teams that all could make a post season run. We are very excited to come out on top," said Head Coach Pepe Fernandez.
With the win, Maryville claims the Shellenberger Memorial Tournament Championship. Payne Fisher, the freshman midfielder from Columbia, Tennessee, was named the tournament's MVP. Joining Fisher on the All-Tournament Team were freshman goalkeeper Zach Gutzman, sophomore forward Tyler Tinker, junior defender John Robertson, and senior midfielder Jake Holt.
With the win, the Scot's record moves to 4-0 on the year. Maryville will be in action Wednesday when they travel to Athens, Tennessee to take on the Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan.
