She began her illustrious career as a leading player for the Florida Gators from 1980-1984, where she was known for her impressive free-throw shooting, with an accuracy of 89.3% in her freshman year. After college, she transitioned to coaching, and from 1996-2012 and again from 2014-2022, she served as the head coach of the Lady Commodores at Gulf Coast State College. Under Scovel's leadership, the women's basketball program at Gulf Coast State College achieved unprecedented success. She led her team to an overall historic record of 646-91, winning an incredible 90 straight games from 2000-2004.

In addition to her six NJCAA national championships and six NJCAA National Coach of the Year awards, Scovel won 18 conference championships and 14 regional titles with the Lady Commodores. Scovel was a mastermind on the sideline, developing talented players into future Division I and WNBA stars. She was a three-time Spalding Coach of the Year, a Pat Summitt Trophy recipient, and a US Marine Corps/WBCA Two-Year College Coach of the Year.

Beyond her impressive accomplishments, Scovel was admired for her dedication to her players and her ability to inspire them to reach their full potential.
