MARYVILLE -- The Maryville College Lady Scots basketball team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday evening to take on Great South member Agnes Scott College. MC earned their fifth consecutive victory with a 52-32 decision.
The orange and garnet held Agnes Scott to 18% shooting in the first half and limited the Scotties to only 10 first half points. Maryville also struggled from the floor and forced numerous turnovers while only putting 20 points on the board at the intermission. After an 8-for-20 shooting binge, Maryville took a 20-10 lead into the second period.
Both teams shot over 50% from the field in the second half, but Agnes Scott could not close the scoring gap as MC dominated on the boards with a 40-24 advantage.
The Scots inside game took advantage of the Scotties with Maryville posting 28 points in the paint.
Maryville (15-6, 11-1 GSAC) was paced in their perimeter attack by Lauren Burnett. The sharp shooting sophomore went 5-for-7 from beyond the arc for a game-high 15 points. Janell Menard was 5-for-11 from the field to finish with 11 points. Kiera Payne, recently named GSAC Player of the Week, tossed in a double-double performance with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tayler Smith added 10 points and eight rebounds to help the Scots' offensive attack.
MC will take to the court on Saturday when they host Piedmont College. The Scots will honor their lone senior C.J. Dake with a pregame ceremony. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
