MARYVILLE -- The Maryville College men's basketball team jumped back into the win column with a strong 76-52 performance over Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Wednesday evening.
MC jumped out with a 6-0 run over the Georgian Scots in the first five minutes culminating with a Christian Ford three-pointer. Ford's long-range basket made the score 11-6. Three consecutive buckets by Maverick Willett and a trey by Wes Lambert gave Maryville a 24-11 advantage at the ten minute mark. A Craig Raye fast-break dunk fired up the visiting Scots and an Oscar Butler three-pointer capped the 15 minute mark with a 16-point, 35-19 lead. MC cruised to the half with a 44-23 advantage following key baskets by Lambert, Corey Conard, and Donald Rucker. Maryville finished the half hitting 58% from the floor while forcing 14 Covenant turnovers with a strong defensive effort.
An 11-0 Maryville run to begin the second half helped the Scots earn their largest lead at 57-25. A final 52% shooting effort allowed MC to cruise to the 24 point victory. Maryville out rebounded Covenant 39-24 and forced 24 turnovers to help the orange and garnet earn the win.
Covenant (5-15, 1-4 GSAC) did not have a player post double digits in scoring.
Maryville (12-8, 3-2 GSAC) was led by senior Milton Stanley. Stanley connected on 7-of-9 shots en route to a 15 point evening. Senior post player Maverick Willett added a dozen points on 6-of-11 shooting. Craig Raye tossed in 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting while Oscar Butler and Donald Rucker combined for 14 rebounds.
The Scots will return to the court this Saturday when they host GSAC rival Huntingdon College. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m. on Randy Lambert Court in MC's Cooper Athletic center.
