KNOXVILLE - This afternoon, at approximately 4:57 p.m., the Knox County Emergency Communications District received an urgent 911 call reporting visible smoke emanating from an apartment located in building 30 of the Copper Point Apartments in West Knoxville. The caller indicated uncertainty regarding the occupancy status of the apartment.

Upon arrival of the first unit from the Knoxville Fire Department (KFD), heavy smoke was detected issuing from apartment 417. Rapid response by emergency crews allowed them to gain entry quickly, where they identified the source of the fire in the laundry room. Remarkably, the fire was brought under control within three minutes of their arrival, preventing further damage from spreading.
Fortunately, it was confirmed that the occupants were not present at the time of the incident. In an unexpected and commendable effort, KFD personnel also rescued an iguana from the apartment, ensuring the safety of the pet amidst the chaos.

The apartment where the fire originated sustained significant smoke and water damage due to firefighting efforts, while several adjacent apartments experienced moderate smoke damage as well. The building's installed alarm system played a critical role in alerting residents to the hazard, enabling them to evacuate safely without any reported injuries.
In the aftermath of the fire, the American Red Cross stepped in to provide assistance to the individuals displaced by the incident. Meanwhile, Knoxville Fire Department Investigators remained on-site to analyze the situation and determine the cause of the fire.
