NASHVILLE – Governor Bill Haslam has recognized Barron Russell of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture with the Governor’s Excellence in Service Award. The biannual award recognizes outstanding state employees who are at the forefront of improving the way Tennessee State Government delivers services.

Russell works as an animal health technician in the State Veterinarian’s office in the Consumer and Industry Services Division. His primary role is to ensure the health and welfare of livestock in Tennessee.

“Barron’s positive attitude and problem solving approach greatly enhance his ability to serve our citizens,” Agriculture Commissioner Jai Templeton said. “When he sees a situation, he always looks for the best outcome for all parties involved. Barron embodies the vision of the Department of Agriculture through his enthusiasm and sincerity for helping fellow Tennesseans.”

A team of TDA leaders nominated Russell for the award. The Governor’s office selected Russell as one of 23 honorees. By exceeding leadership and customer expectations, creating innovative solutions or improving processes and services, Governor’s Excellence in Service Award winners are helping provide taxpayers with the highest quality service at the lowest possible cost.

“He continuously thinks outside the box to identify solutions,” Assistant Commissioner Keith Harrison said. “We are extremely fortunate to have him as part of our Consumer and Industries Services team.”

“His knowledge of animal health issues and his pleasant demeanor are key to his success in providing excellent customer service,” Dr. Samantha Palmer said. “He always makes his customers a priority, listening with patience and without judgement and going above and beyond to address needs in a timely manner.”

“I feel very honored to have been selected for this award,” Russell said. “I work with many talented people in the Department of Agriculture, and to be selected from among them is very flattering.”

Russell moved to Tennessee from New Orleans in 2005, following Hurricane Katrina. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from Middle Tennessee State University, and he is now a resident of Hermitage. Russell enjoys dog training and reptiles.
