KNOXVILLE — Nearly 250 were on hand at Cherokee Country Club last week, as the Great Smoky Mountain Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) honored its 2014 National Philanthropy Day Award Winners. Selected from a slate of nominees in each of six categories, winners exemplify the National Philanthropy Day slogan, “Change the world with a giving heart.”

Winners included: 13-year-old Andrew Bingham, Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy, nominated by Knoxville’s Cerebral Palsy Center; Dugan McLaughlin, Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser, nominated by Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley; Trinity Health Foundation, Outstanding Foundation, nominated by Holston Conference Foundation; Walgreens, Corporate Philanthropist, nominated by the Eastern Tennessee Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association; Dr. Edwin Robertson (posthumously), Outstanding Philanthropist, nominated by Lincoln Memorial University; and Martha Scheidler, Nonprofit Professional, nominated by Freddi Birdwell. An additional 17 volunteers were recognized at the luncheon for their contributions of time and talent to area nonprofits.

AFP has coordinated National Philanthropy Day® since its inception in 1986 after President Reagan signed the official NPD proclamation. The purpose of this day is to recognize the great contributions of philanthropy—and those people active in the philanthropic community—to the enrichment of our world.

Representing more than 30,000 members in 235 chapters throughout the world, the Association of Fundraising Professionals works to foster development and growth of fundraising professionals and promote high ethical standards in the fundraising profession.
